也就是说，在这样的时代，人类学越来越关注文化中的艺术现象，艺术学也越来越需要人类学的思考方式。为此，20世纪80年代以来，有关艺术人类学的专著和论文越来越多。如果说在这之前虽然有不少人类学家关注艺术方面的研究，但那都是将其作为文化整体中的一部分来综合研究的，而在20世纪80年代以后，这种情况就发生了巨大的改观，艺术人类学开始有了自己的独特视角，并自成体系。

正如英国的人类学家奈杰尔·拉波特和乔安娜·奥弗林在《社会文化人类学的关键概念》一书中所写的：“那种认为人类学知识必须被看作整体的或霸权的观念已经受到挑战。通过图像媒介研究人类行为的音—像纬度，研究以可视符号和听得见的声音显示的文化——比如姿态、手稿、演说、仪礼、仪式艺术作品、工艺制品，视觉人类学认为自身能够做出重要的贡献。”他们还写道：“艺术与视觉人类学已经发展成为另一分支，与美学问题相关。”[64]
