1700040145 地球仍将是我们未来几千年的家园。本书中提到的概念没有任何一个是暗示人类将很快离开地球。没错,地球是有问题。但是,通过离开地球来逃避问题或逃避即将发生的危险,均不切实际而且十分愚蠢。在现实生活中,我看不出有什么理由让人认为诸如火星上的生活会好于地球上的生活。除非遭到月球大小的天体的撞击,导致我们的地球母亲彻底解体,或者像《银河系搭车客指南》(The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy )中的情节一样,一支沃贡人的飞船队正在铺设星系间高速公路,否则地球永远都比火星宜人。让我们想想核战争或小行星撞击吧。它们的结果基本上是一样的。幸存下来的1%的人类,靠着从超市废墟中找到的豌豆罐头在地下生活数年之久。但是这样的生活相对于在寒冷、贫瘠、几乎没有空气的火星上开始新的生活,仍然要容易得多。而且请记住,在我们这个伟大的太阳系中,生活在任何其他行星或月球上,都比生活在火星上更加艰难。
