山德士公司自己开发上市：环孢素A的发现

在研究了众多抗肿瘤药后，斯特哈林于1969年构建了新的动物模型，让动物在接受过抗肿瘤药实验后，再接受免疫抑制药物的筛选。1970年，他们开始应用这一模型进行免疫类药物筛选，并于1972年发现了环孢素A（cyclosporin A）。

1969年，山德士公司的微生物学家汉斯·彼得·弗赖（Hans Peter Frey）已经从一块挪威的土壤中培养了丝状真菌（tolypocladium inflatum），并从它的分泌物中分离得到了环孢素，它是一个只有11个氨基酸的环形多肽。当发现它的免疫抑制作用后，山德士公司加快研发进度，罗伊·卡恩（Roy Calne）主持了本品的临床研究。结果发现临床效果优异。这次，山德士没有转让环孢素A，而是自己推向市场。
