自我参照他者所实现的认同并不是复原一个“旧时的我”，也不是要牵强地把“我”拉进他者的世界，甚至不是对他者产生同情和理解。相反，我们可以不断地变换角色，多视角、多层面地反复体味被物质化的人生历史和被客观化的主观情感，在多个自我和多个他者的经验对话中维系某种精神的独立性，或者在斗转星移的人世变迁中保持一种生命的热情和充实性，获得一种能够凝聚自我的感情。一言以蔽之，就是协助我们保持“深度”的持久性。

还是杜夫海纳说得好：“有深度就是把自己放在某一方位，使自己的整个存在都有感觉，使自身集中起来并介入进去。……有深度，就是不愿成为物，永远外在于自身，被分散和肢解于时间的流逝之中。有深度，就是变得能有一种内心生活，把自己聚集在自身，获得一种内心感情，亦即普拉蒂诺所说的‘意识’一词所明确指出的东西：一个作为肯定能力而不是作为否定能力的自为的浮现。”[5]在“我”“成为我”的过程中，记忆、过去、传统、历史毋庸置疑是无可替代的，这是建构“我”之时间维度的必要因素，也是保证“我”有能力在瞬息流变的世界中，维持自我之连续性的重要因素。与此同时，他人、社会、差异等，也是不可或缺的，这些因素促成了对“我”之空间维度的形塑，使“我”能够在不被世界抛弃的前提下，以相对完整和个性化的自我形态存在于众人之中。当然，“成为我”是一项永远不可能停止的身份规划和记忆工程，它也将永远处在一种未完成的、开放的状态。
