天际晦暗的时刻，很难分辨是暮色还是晨曦。2017年初，《华盛顿邮报》决定在报头下方刻写一句铭文：“民主死于黑暗”（Democracy Dies in Darkness）。黑暗的隐喻不只是在警示特朗普对民主政治的威胁，甚至不只是对美国动荡时局的忧患，而是对西方文明再次陷入严峻危机的预告。2017年西方思想的流变透露出多种明暗交织的迹象：美国社会的分裂在加剧，欧洲开启了“马克龙时刻”的转机，中国的影响力正在改变世界格局，民主的危机再次成为焦点议题，反性侵运动席卷全球，“思想工业”的兴起正在转变公共领域的结构，而人工智能的发展令人兴奋也让人忧虑。对于西方世界而言，2017年仍然是一个不确定的时刻。但有一些长期的结构性证据表明，这个晦暗时刻更可能是漫漫长夜前的黄昏，而不是黎明将至的预兆。
