从金融危机爆发的2008年开始，宣告西方体制濒临崩溃的声音便不绝于耳。而到2016年年底，在欧美经历了一系列令人震惊的事变之后，断言“自由秩序的终结”已无需任何先见之明，几乎成为舆论界的时尚，因为证据是如此重大、直接而明确：英国公投退出欧盟，法国、意大利与荷兰的脱欧势力正跃跃欲试，而匈牙利和波兰已被民族主义的政治领导人俘获，欧盟似乎危在旦夕。特朗普宣扬的“美国优先”政纲与大西洋彼岸的反全球化运动遥相呼应，这也意味着美国将试图摆脱不堪重负的引领责任。怀着“自由世界的灯塔”会黯然失色的忧虑，有人将“最后的希望”寄予德国总理默克尔的连任可能，这是过于沉重且前景不明的寄托。
