近年来，美国多所著名的私立大学纷纷向社会公众开放教学资源。2001年，麻省理工学院率先启动“开放式课件”项目（OCW），在互联网上推出各种学科的课件（包括部分教学视频），至今已累积多达1925门课程，可供自由访问浏览（http://ocw.mit.edu），并相继制作了多个语种（包括中文）的版本，被视为具有里程碑意义的教育创新举措。随后，耶鲁大学和斯坦福大学等高校也陆续推出类似的开放课程。在这个据说是公益精神日渐退化的时代，私立大学积极承担公共教育的责任是一个值得赞许和关注的动向。
