在总体社会结构的普遍性和“场所”的特殊性之间，有一个社会空间尺度，由此可以澄清特定阶级形成的具体性。此外，这样一种明显狭小的焦点仍然可以揭示出那些往往对阶级实践的本质产生全球影响的机制。在本章中，我试图表明这一尺度（为简便起见我称之为“地区”）如何不仅大大有助于澄清社会过程与空间过程之间的关系。同时，我还要表明，由于资本主义发展的不平衡性，这一尺度对现代社会阶级研究来说如何代表一个更有用的切入点。从一个方面来看，下文试图界定“地区”这一争论不休的概念，而且我打算通过论证地区的边界主要与统治阶级实践的界限相关联来完成这项任务。在文化层面上，尤其在政治方面甚至在有限的经济范围内，这些实践都能够为劳动的利益所支配，就像它们受资本利益的支配一样。
