在追溯西方国际关系理论发展的历史沿革时，我们发现一个非常难得的巧合。西方国际关系理论的发展史恰好经历了80年，产生了四个带“九”的里程碑：1919年国际关系理论诞生，成为社会科学中的一门独立的学科；1939年爱德华·卡尔发表《二十年危机（1919—1939）：国际关系研究导论》，标志西方国际关系理论发展的新阶段——现实主义学派的开端；1979年肯尼思·华尔兹出版《国际政治理论》，第三次论战从此揭开了序幕；1999年，西方国际关系理论面临新世纪的到来，正处在一个重要的世纪之交的历史发展时期。80年的历史可分为前20年（1919—1939），中间40年（1939—1979）和后20年（1979—1999）。前20年是形成期，中间40年是成长成熟期，后20年是发展期。汤姆逊的《国际思想大师》写至1980年，虽然涵盖的是1919年至1979年60年西方国际关系理论的历史沿革，但也为后20年（1979—1999）的发展提供了有益的研究框架和思路。至此，我们不妨对西方国际关系理论的产生和沿革作以下归纳：一部美国西方国际关系理论的历史包含着两次“革命”（现实主义革命和行为主义革命），三次论战（理想主义与现实主义、科学行为主义与传统主义、新现实主义与新自由主义）和六个主要学派（理想主义、现实主义、科学行为主义、传统主义、新现实主义和新自由主义）。本书的以下各章将逐一加以介评。
