当然也会有中产阶级有房者支持工党，而政府公屋住户却支持保守党的情况。但这些例外还不至于让威尔逊的理论站不稳脚跟。阶级政治卷土重来且愈加深入骨髓。直到20世纪最后10年，公民的政治倾向几乎无一例外都能通过他的社会背景来推断出来。中产阶级对保守党的一贯支持，部分原因是自由党内部的巨大变化，另外则是因为他们始终认为一旦工党和它的工会联盟取得了政权，等待自己的定会是物质上的巨大损失。
