如今摆在读者们面前的这本《爪牙：清代县衙的书吏与差役》，其英文原书出版于2000年，系斯坦福大学出版社推出的“中国的法律、社会与文化”（Law，Society，and Culture in China）系列丛书之一种。这套由当时任教于加利福尼亚大学洛杉矶分校（UCLA）历史系的黄宗智（Philip C. C. Huang）教授和白凯（Kathryn Bernhardt）教授联袂主编的英文学术丛书，从1994年至2001年，总共出版了7本，其中包括1本专题论文集和6本个人专著。(546)而在那6本个人专著的5位作者当中（黄宗智教授一人撰写了其中的两本），除了麦柯丽（Melissa Ann Macauley），其他4位皆与加利福尼亚大学洛杉矶分校历史系有着深厚的学术渊源，他们分别是该丛书的两位共同主编黄宗智、白凯，以及其门下的两位弟子苏成捷（Matthew H. Sommer，现为斯坦福大学历史系教授）和本书作者白德瑞（Bradly W. Reed，现为弗吉尼亚大学历史系副教授）。在2008年发表的一篇长篇论文中，我曾将黄宗智、白凯、苏成捷、白德瑞等师生组成的学术群体称为“UCLA中国法律史研究群”，并指出他们的研究在很大程度上共同推动了美国的中国法律史研究之范式转变。(547)正如知名的美国中国法研究者戴茂功（Neil J. Diamant）教授在2001年发表的一篇英文书评当中所评论的那样，“在过去的十年间，一场智识上的地震正轰然作响地发生于中国法律史研究领域。确切地说，它的震中位于洛杉矶。正是在那里，加利福尼亚大学洛杉矶分校历史系的一些学者与博士生们，成功地从根基上动摇了数十年来关于中国（尤其是清代）法律的一些流行看法”。(548)

作为上述英文学术丛书当中的一种，本书脱胎于作为“UCLA中国法律史研究群”之核心成员的白德瑞1994年提交给加利福尼亚大学洛杉矶分校的博士学位论文。除了内容方面的进一步完善，白德瑞在其博士论文之基础上后续所做的精心打磨，还体现在对书名的修改上面。相较于当初的博士论文题目“Scoundrels and Civil Servants：Clerks，Runners，and County Administration in Late Imperial China”（《无赖与公人：中华帝国晚期的书吏、差役与县级行政》），如今所用的书名Talons and Teeth：County Clerks and Runners in the Qing Dynasty（《爪牙：清代县衙的书吏与差役》），不仅更为形象与凝练，而且也更容易为读者们所记住。
