然而布迪厄却并非是一个纯反对型的知识分子，他并不完全拒绝参与社会改革的实际事务。尽管他反对知识分子为政治权力服务，但他本人也曾为社会党的密特朗政府提供帮助。1985年，他应密特朗的邀请，起草了一系列教育改革大纲。1988年，罗卡尔（Michel Rocard）出任法国总理，布迪厄接受了教育课程研究委员会主席的职位，并对法国教育课程提出了不少建议。从20世纪80年代到90年代，他越来越多地在电视、报刊上接受采访或发表文章，也更加频繁地到欧洲、美国和日本出访与讲学。这些都在相当程度上建立了他的公众知识分子的形象。费希特（J. G. Fichte）说过，什么样的哲学家做什么样的哲学9，我们也可以说，什么样的知识分子提什么样的知识分子理论。这对布迪厄可以说是很合适的。我们大可不必把他关于科学知识分子的理论当作一种人人应当遵行的模式，因为并不是人人都有可能成为具有布迪厄那样经历、成就和影响的知识分子。即使是在法国传统中，可以成为知识分子表率的也远不止布迪厄一人，萨特、加缪、福柯都是这样的知识分子。尽管他们的遭遇、经历和社会实践与布迪厄不同，但就言行一致、我行我知而论，他们其实又何尝不能说是属于同一群体的知识分子。
