后全球金融危机时代对于经济学家，包括发展经济学家来说，应该是一个激动人心的时代，因为它显著地显示了主流范式的缺点。这种范式对发展经济学曾有过巨大影响，虽然这种影响已经因它未能解决问题而逐渐减弱。幸运的是，我们还有其他可行的分析框架——有许多新思想为一些国家的巨大成功和另外一些国家的悲惨失败提供了新的解释。出于这一点理解，我们也许能够创造出新的政策框架，从而为经济增长的新时代奠定基础——这种增长应该是可持续的，并且能提高世界上最穷的国家大部分人们的福利。
