【解答】有人说把 cannot 写成一个字的是英国式，把 can not 写成两个字的是美国式。不过 Perrin 在 Writer’s Guide and Index to English 上说，cannot 的形式是 more common.而 Nicholson 编的 A Dictionary of American- English Usage 上也说：“除了特别加强的场合，通常都是把 cannot 写成一字。” Wood 在 Current English Usage 上说得更明白：“美国英语允许将 can not 写成二字，但英国英语则写作一字，只在特别加强否定时，才分开来写。”由此可见 cannot 是英美两国现在通用的形式，不加强意思是不分作二字的。
