【解答】英文的形容词有好几种情形是可以作名词用的，问题中的 dark 便是名词，不是形容词。至于为什么宜用 dark 的名词，代替 darkness 的名词，在解答这个问题之前，须先把 dark 和 darkness 两个名词的含义弄个明白。两字皆有“黑暗”、“秘密”、“无知”、“暗色”等义，唯 dark 一字独具“夜（night）”及“日暮（nightfall）”的意思，所以上句要改成 in the dark（=at night），正是为此。猫在夜里极微弱的光中把瞳孔放大，便能见物，如果到了完全的黑暗中，它也是什么都看不见的。在下到各句中的 dark 全是作“日暮”解，不可以改为 darkness：
