英语里politics是一个很复杂的词，可以指“政治学”，也可以指“从事政治”、“政治活动”（如enter politics是“进入政界”），乃至“政见”（如What are your politics？是问“你的政见如何？”）。这些都是中性词。但play politics则有贬义，是“耍政治手腕”，尤其指搞阴谋诡计，所以在一般英美人眼里Politics is a dirty word.由此派生出的名词politicking也带有明显的贬义，指进行政治游说等活动。大家都知道politician是一个贬义词，相当于中文的“政客”，party politician就是“党棍”。但是形容词political则是一个中性词，意思是“（与）政治有关的”，也可是“对政治感兴趣的”或“积极从事政治活动的”。但是即使这样，也和我们的“讲政治”不一样。英语里指的是职业上的从政，一般人是不涉及politics的。而politic虽然也是形容词，意思却大不一样，更多指“谨慎的”、“精明的”。

现在回到原句中的politically correct。其实这可以看成一个短语，遗憾的是《英汉大词典》也解释为“政治正确的”，对中国读者很容易造成误解。这大概是学生们译错的原因。第4版Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English提供的解释是language，behavior，or attitude that are politically correct are carefully chosen so that they do not offend or insult anyone，指谨慎，不得罪人；其名词political correctness的释义更明白：language，behavior,and attitudes that are carefully chosen so that they do not offend or insult anyone。后面还给了一个例句：Political correctness has had an impact on the language people use to describe women.（谨慎对用于描写女性的语言产生了影响。）而美国出的The American Heritage College Dictionary的释义是：1.Of,relating to,or supporting a program of broad social,political,and educational change,esp.race,class,gender,and sexual orientation.2.Being or perceived as being over-concerned with such change,esp.in the avoidance of giving offence。特别指出表示在社会、政治、教育、种族，性别等问题上的谨慎。从这两本字典的解释来看，原句可以译为：他说话总是四平八稳，从不得罪人。

英语和汉语有不同的习惯表达法（idiomatic expressions），从语法上机械地分析往往不易弄清。其实，这里的slow是修饰整个成语step by step的，从语义分析可将其看成是副词（状语），其意思应该是“慢慢地一步一步（地）”，所以全句可译为：他一步一步地做，进行得很慢。（或：他从容不迫，一步一步地进行。）
