没有多少人能像作者魏泓那样，对丝绸之路上的物质及其文化有如此深入的了解和“纠缠”多年的情感。她不仅是英国国家图书馆的国际敦煌项目负责人，还是与丝绸之路物质打了多年交道的老朋友。在作者笔下，丝绸之路上那些古老的物仍然迸发着生命力。比如本书十件古物中的丝绸，不仅限于最早诞生在古代中国的柔滑面料，还有在自东向西的旅程中吸收了粟特、萨珊、拜占庭等文化后演变而成的中亚丝绸、拜占庭丝绸。它们在离开东方后，成了中亚和西方人的新宠，其用途和地位也悄然发生变化，既是华美的衣物、表达虔诚的祭品，也是皇权的象征、外交的礼物，以及包裹圣骨的“宝函”。
