1706274207 我们称为美国独立战争(美国革命)的事件并不是一场真正的革命,至少在这场革命发生的时候是这样的。1775~1782年的军事斗争并不是“美利坚的民族”为了建立一个人人生而平等,享有言论、宗教以及新闻自由,横跨北美大陆的统一的共和国而进行的斗争。相反,这是一场由多个民族组成的松散军事联盟所采取的极其保守的行动。每个民族最关心的都是保持或重新控制各自的文化、特色以及权力结构。反叛民族当然不希望联合组成一个单一的共和国:英国当权派愚蠢地试图将他们同化为一个由伦敦集中控制的同质帝国。一些民族——内陆地区、新尼德兰以及新法兰西——根本没有反叛。那些反叛的民族并不是在进行一场革命,而是在各自进行殖民解放战争。
