19世纪30年代以前，人们常说“南方”将奴隶制看成一种令人尴尬、过时的制度，应该允许奴隶制逐步退出历史舞台。但在1830年之后，“南方人”越来越多地颂扬奴隶制度，支持其在北美大陆的扩张，甚至将奴隶制塑造成一个获得《圣经》认可的道德体系。

虽然这些发展进程的的确确发生了，但是推动这些发展进程的过程基本上并未得到任何解释。在新兴的南方美利坚邦联中，奴隶制的神圣化是北美大陆两种主要奴隶文化（沿海低地文化以及南方腹地文化）相对权力发生重大转移的结果。第三种文化——大阿巴拉契亚文化——直到内战后才真正加入我们所谓的迪克西联盟。

1820年以前，沿海低地已经控制了北美大陆东南部。在殖民地时期以及共和国初期，弗吉尼亚一直是英属北美殖民地和美利坚各州中人口最多的地区。通过适当剥夺大阿巴拉契亚地区的代表权，沿海低地的士绅们对地区和国家政治产生了巨大的影响力，为《独立宣言》以及1789年宪法提供了智力源泉。美利坚合众国前五位总统中有四位总统来自沿海低地地区。与南方腹地近邻相比，沿海低地地区更加幅员辽阔、更加富有、更加发达，在国家舞台上代表了“南方”。沿海低地的精英们来自开明的理想化英格兰乡村士绅社会。这些精英对奴隶制的存在表示遗憾，并期待着奴隶制早日退出历史舞台。[1]

但是，在19世纪20年代和30年代，随着南方腹地迅速扩张，沿海低地失去了大部分权力以及影响力。在19世纪早期的大迁徙中，被边民们包围的沿海低地无法有意图地向西扩大自己的影响力。与此同时，大阿巴拉契亚和南方腹地的人们迅速扩张各自文化的控制区域。1789～1840年，大阿巴拉契亚的地理面积增加了一倍多，有效地控制了四个新成立州的州政府。在这一时期，南方腹地的领土面积增长了近十倍，统治下的州议会由两个增加到了六个。伴随着这一扩张，代表蓄奴的美利坚发声的不再是华盛顿、杰斐逊以及麦迪逊这样的弗吉尼亚士绅，而是像约翰·C.卡尔霍恩（John C. Calhoun）、路易斯·维格法尔（Louis Wigfall）和罗伯特·雷特（Robert Rhett）这样的来自南卡罗来纳的煽动者。
