多年来，我在北大所从事的教学和研究，可归结为三个领域或层次：一是历史理论，属于宏观史学领域；二是资本主义史，属于中观史学领域；三是美国史，属于微观史学领域。我出版的《人类文明的历程》，大概属于宏观史学领域；而已经出版的《美国边疆史》和《美国“棉花王国”史》，则属于微观史学领域。目前正在研究和写作的，是一部有关资本主义史的东西，可以看成是我的中观史学。这项工作十分浩繁。因有好几处向我提及出版美国通史问题，兹将我多年在北大讲授美国通史课的讲稿，略作增删以《美国史通论》之名先交付出版，以应社会之需。经朱孝远先生联系，学林出版社领导慨允，不胜喜悦。乐惟清先生不仅仔细审阅了我的手稿，还提出了一些有益的建议，使本书增色不少。在此特表谢忱！

根据刘方女士的建议，决定把本书纳入北大出版社《名家通识讲座》书系。本书的基础，本是我在北大讲授美国通史的讲稿，前几年也作为全校“通选课”在北大开过，因此纳入该系列也是可以的。
