新的社会运动的兴起，缓冲了现代社会引起的不安定。现代社会的本身特性毁灭了传统，毁灭了在世上生存和与世界联系的传统方式（梅卢奇1989）。从这一视角观察，数不胜数的地区性徒步群体和在英国兜售出去的每年几百万徒步假日可被视为网络上的点，增加了社会运动和社交活动，超越了民族、社会和文化风景的疆界，打破了个体的孤独。这种纵横交错穿越英国的密集路网通向大自然中的地方，不仅如此，而且沿路的人类运动创造了路网伸及的地方。同样密集的徒步者网络，他们共享的经验、他们创造的记忆和历史，这一切又创造出了“指向时间的流逝和延续……的低音线（bass line）”（奥吉1995：77），在其中存在着一个地方，可以重建一种社会感——实际上就是重新想象和重新建构共同体。
