1914年8月5日上午,报纸上登载了博柏利(Burberry)为军官设计的战壕风衣的广告。广告主角是一名布尔战争的老兵,在新近发生的敌对状态下,这类老兵可以被授予从总司令到中尉的所有军衔(士官和其他军衔的军士只能穿胶布雨披)。博柏利还可以在四天内提供“现役配套服装”。另一则广告恳请本土防卫军的军官购买越野汽车,每辆只需275英镑,这些汽车可以承受“最恶劣的使用环境”,可以在“最陡峭的山坡上行驶”,每加仑汽油可以行驶20英里至24英里。[1]几天之内,报纸上还宣传说,“被国家接纳入伍的负有保卫和进攻职责的每一个人都应该携带一瓶J.克里斯·布朗的利眠宁”,可以在药剂师那里买到,价格为2先令9便士,对“治疗腹泻、痢疾、腹绞痛和其他肠道疾病有特效”。[2]
