37岁的赫伯特·L.马修斯是《纽约时报》负责报道西班牙共和国的首席记者。[1]他身材瘦长,说话轻声细语,经常头戴贝雷帽,身穿灰色的法兰绒裤子。以格尼的英国人视角来看,马修斯“言行举止是典型的美国佬银行家做派。他又高又瘦,衣服穿在他身上就好像搭在晾衣架上一般;他的脸又瘦又长,颧骨突出,总是一副有点儿不以为然的神情。在战壕里面遇见来回穿梭的马修斯算是种难得的经历。他总是西装革履,就好像刚从办公室出来似的。他的衣着挺过时的,脚上的系带靴子还是我爷爷年轻时城市绅士的指定款式。营里的人对他都挺冷淡,他们觉得《纽约时报》派来的代表对他们的理想和事业肯定多有反感。结果证明,我们完全错了”。[2]
