如果以印度中小学和大学的历史课本为依据，那么印度河文明在这个国家的历史意识中可以说无足轻重。它在课表中毫不重要，关于它的介绍也杂乱得令人绝望，这就是印度学界对印度河文明的典型学术态度。然而，这个公元前三千纪青铜时代最大的文明，理应获得远超目前情形的集中关注；它深深地扎根于印度次大陆，并在印度形成如今模样的过程中做出了根本性的贡献。仍待破解的印度河文字使我们无法在当下对其进行解读和讨论，但已发掘出的文物足以佐证这个文明如何兴起，如何繁荣，如何衰落，并最终成为整个次大陆文化潮流的一部分。[5]
