本书的完成，首先要感谢各地、各沟的羌族。若非他们在社会、文化与历史记忆上保存与展现其驳杂特性，我不可能认识这一段历史与相关族群现象。我也要感谢他们让我了解自己——当我们的历史心性不断创造一些“历史”来区分征服者与被征服者、老居民与新移民时，羌族与许多西南民族以“弟兄祖先故事”提醒我们有一个平等竞争的我群与他群关系的存在。我更要感谢我的羌族朋友们。近八年来，他们陪着我在岷江上游与北川，到处翻山越梁上寨子。靠着他们的热诚帮忙以及他们的社会人际关系，我才得以完成这些探访研究。
