2018年1月，我刚刚读完本书的初校清样，2月1日便从沈宝媛的女儿张维萍女士那里，得知沈老太太已于1月31日去世（1924—2018），享年95岁。可惜，她不能看到本书的出版了。

我向张女士询问，能否提供几张沈老太太的照片。第二天，张女士便通过微信发来十几张，既有沈宝媛年轻时的，也有去世前几年的。我选了两张收入书中，作为对这个老人的纪念。

讲故事的人走了，她的故事留了下来。没有沈宝媛在1945年那个夏天的调查，就没有这本书。她的这个调查，哪怕是在70多年后的今天，还是值得认真研读和品味。
