本书作者梅天穆现任美国北乔治亚大学文学院教授、副院长。1996 年,作者在美国印第安纳大学内陆欧亚系获得硕士学位,论文题目是《绰儿马罕那颜:中东地区的第一位蒙古军事统帅》(Chormaqan Noyan: The First Mongol Military Governor in the Middle East)。2004 年,他在威斯康星大学麦迪逊分校获得历史学博士学位,师从著名蒙古史学者大卫·摩根,博士论文题目是《征服与统治之术:蒙古帝国的崛起和扩张,1185—1265》(The Mechanics of Conquest and Governance: The Rise and Expansion of the Mongol Empire, 1185-1265)。自 2004 年起,作者任教于北乔治亚大学,历任助理教授、副教授、教授,2009 年起担任历史、人类学与哲学系主任。他的主要学术兴趣是蒙古帝国史、游牧帝国史、军事史、游牧-农耕关系史以及现代蒙古史,讲授的课程包括世界史、伊斯兰世界宗教与思想史、中央欧亚史、中世纪中东史、十字军史和蒙古征服史等,同时开办物质文化史、圣战、阿富汗与大博弈、蒙古之后的内陆欧亚等主题的研讨班。

梅氏的博士导师大卫·摩根以《蒙古人》(The Mongols,Oxford:Blackwell,1986;2nd edition,2007)一书蜚声西方学界。其书雅俗共赏,不仅成为蒙古史方向研究生入门的必读书,也颇受一般读者喜爱。梅氏的著作颇具乃师之风,立意宏阔,脉络清晰,高度概括,兼以文笔活泼,可读性强。本书即其代表。本书关注的核心是蒙古时代的“全球化”及其影响,横向范围从东亚绵延至西欧,纵向范围从 12 世纪延续到 20 世纪。如此广阔而久远的时空当中的纷纭历史,把握起来很有难度。作者以几近最简约易懂的文字,勾勒出最宏观的历史脉络,有条不紊。同时,书中融汇了西方学术界的多数最新成果,有进一步兴趣的读者也可从注释和参考文献中按图索骥,深入阅读其他学者的著述。从某种意义上而言,本书是近二三十年西方蒙古帝国史学界成果的一个贯通式的概括。著名蒙古史学者彭晓燕认为,本书“将成为对于世界史和蒙古帝国史课程有用的教材,与大卫·摩根的经典著作《蒙古人》比肩”。1
