20世纪七八十年代是当代西方史学发生新转折的关键时期，虽然很难找到一个特定的年份、事件或论著作为历史学文化转向的明确界标，但在那一时期确实出现了种种的迹象，预示了日后文化史研究的蓬勃发展。前一章从三个不同的历史学维度在总体上介绍了这一史学的文化转向之发生，本章则选择一个具体的例证进一步加以说明。如果把某个历史学家、某部论著作为这一转向的例证可能显得略微单薄了一些，所以这里不妨以1981年夏秋的两期《跨学科历史学刊》（Journal of Interdisciplinary History）上的一次史学现状与趋势的大讨论为例，从中或可寻找到一些新转折的蛛丝马迹。

创刊于20世纪60年代末的《跨学科历史学刊》本身就是战后西方史学朝向经济—社会史研究发生转折的一个产物，顾名思义，当时的历史学开始越来越多地借鉴社会学、经济学、心理学等学科的理论，在方法上广泛地借助于统计、计量、心理分析等手段，跨学科研究成为历史学发展的巨大动力。七八十年代历史学的新转向同样是在借鉴其他学科基础上的一种跨学科历史开拓，只是这一次同历史学并肩齐进的是另一门不同的学科——人类学，尤其是文化人类学，从而形成了一门新的历史学分支学科——历史人类学（或人类学史学），也就是今天所称的新文化史。新方法、新领域和新理论的产生并不意味着要抛弃旧的，传统的历史学门类始终有其存在的价值，它们也在新的时代中不断地丰富和调整自己，受到了新的文化史研究取向的影响，在历史研究和写作的主流中，新文化史逐渐占据了主导。
