英国文化学家戴维·钱尼从一个非历史学家的角度，针对文化研究在当代历史学中的反映，将其中带有明显文化研究特征的历史研究归纳为三种类型：“第一类与文化有着最直接的联系，因为它特别关注前工业时期的大众文化”，它主要受到了文化人类学的影响，代表人物有娜塔莉·戴维斯和罗伯特·达恩顿等；第二类是法国的年鉴学派历史学家，“他们在文化史方面的影响显然来自他们把精神面貌加以理论化，使之成为文化实践与生产的场所”；“第三类历史类著作结合了米歇尔·福柯的视角，以独立的姿态出现，对马克思主义传统和年鉴传统都持批判的态度”(36)。虽然他的这种划分同上文中所论述的三个来源略有重叠又并不完全一致，但还是很好地说明了不同理论来源在新文化史研究中表现出的不同侧重。这三个来源共同构建了近些年来在西方史学中非常活跃的新文化史的理论基础，如果说，英国马克思主义史学和法国年鉴学派史学代表了历史学在经历了社会史繁荣和衰退后的一种内在的自我反省的话，那么后现代主义文化批评和历史叙述主义则可以看作是来自外部的当代西方学术思潮对历史学的强大挑战，而文化人类学则恰好在历史学最危急的时刻适时地施以援手，代替社会学和经济学成为了它新的盟友。由此建立起来的新文化史，再一次扭转了西方史学长河前进的方向，在新的潮流的引领下，古老的历史学始终没有停下脚步，反而展现出愈加年轻和活跃的生命力。
