彼得·伯克在2001年修订他十年前主编的《历史写作的新观点》（New Perspectives on Historical Writing）一书时，特地在每一篇之后撰写了一段文字，补充各个新的历史研究领域在90年代里最新的变化和发展。其中微观史学依旧保持了繁荣之势，尤其体现在各种新的微观研究著作的不断推出方面，他列举了一系列新出版的重要著作，主要是来自意大利、德国、法国和美国的微观史家，但也包括其他国家，如西班牙的耶米·孔特雷拉斯（Jaime Contreras）、荷兰的凡·杜森（A．Th．van Deursen）等(69)。这些研究基本上都继承了经典微观史学聚焦于普通人或村落、社区、家庭等小型社会的研究传统，同时也延续了一般微观史学在叙述和解释中所普遍存在的利与弊。

对于微观史学的前景，伯克建议道：“历史学家也许应该像物理学家那样，必须学会忍受另一种选择以及表面上不相容的概念，微观史家的粒子同宏观史家的长波可以相并存。我们所缺乏的是一种在历史学上同尼尔斯·玻尔（Niels Bohr）相当的做法，把互相补充变成为一种美德。”(70)微观史家和他们的批评者，只有双方捐弃前嫌、不再固守己见，进而尽力去思考和尝试将微观与宏观、局部与整体、日常经验与社会结构等结合在一起，两种相对的史学取向也许才可以成为很好的补充而非对立，这也更能够体现当代史学兼容并蓄、海纳百川的开放精神。至于理想的微观史学形式，只有以此为基础才能得以实现。匈牙利历史学家伊斯特万·兹雅托（István Szijártó）所提出的四个方面或许可以作为对伯克的进一步补充：“（理想的微观史学著作）它能够以其趣味性吸引读者；它传递了活生生的经验；它既立足于现实的基础之上，又通过聚焦事件、人物或社区而发散开去；它指向了普遍性。”(71)未来的历史学家，不妨更多地怀着平和之心和伯克所说的互补的美德，来看待各种历史研究的取向；对于微观史学，不妨以此四点为标准只评判其优劣，而不论其是非。
