2007年，从普林斯顿大学历史系退休的达恩顿得到了一个新的职位——担任哈佛大学图书馆馆长，让他得以继续在学术和职业领域深入进行关于书本与阅读的历史考察。任职以后，他直接参与哈佛大学图书馆与谷歌公司关于扫描藏书开放谷歌图书的合作，尽管在有关图书版权、市场垄断等法律问题上，达恩顿对谷歌图书搜索持保留的态度，希望能够将网络电子图书放到一个开放的公共平台上去，而不要沦为某种商业利益驱使下的知识垄断，但在总体上，达恩顿对电子图书、电子阅读带来的巨大影响仍然充满了希望。他将信息时代里这一新兴的知识传播形式同15世纪古腾堡印刷术的发明相提并论：“电子化交流蓬勃发展同活字印刷的发明一样具有革命性，我们对它的接受认同同15世纪的读者面对印刷文本的时候一样为难。”(30)他从一个书籍史和阅读史家的角度，坚信电子化是知识传播形式发展必然的趋势，在他的展望中，“不论未来会是什么，它都将是数字式的”(31)。

作为新文化史的代表人物之一，罗伯特·达恩顿的史学实践很好地反映了新文化史独特的研究取向。彼得·伯克对其这样评论道：“效仿人类学家，达恩顿将文化史家的任务界定为‘捕捉他性’，尤其是紧随于吉尔茨之后，他提出‘就像人们阅读一则民间故事或一篇哲学文本一样，还可以阅读一场仪式或是一座城市’。”(32)我们还可以说，达恩顿更将文化史家的工作变成了一种“阅读”，并从遥远的历史空间一直延伸到电子的、虚拟的和数字化的网络空间。
