林·亨特在《新文化史》一书的导言中把法国历史学家罗杰·夏蒂埃归为“第四代年鉴历史学家”(1)，点出了夏蒂埃的治史观念同前一代法国史家间的区别。作为新一代年鉴学派的代表人物，通过夏蒂埃的个案，也可以充分地说明新文化史同在20世纪影响整个西方史学的法国年鉴历史学派之间的联系和差异，并反映年鉴派史学对新文化史兴起所做的贡献。夏蒂埃对年鉴学派历史研究方法的批评和修正主要体现在两个方面：“第一，反对系列史，即在长时段中量化地考察历史的方法；第二，反对‘心态’的概念和方法。”(2)基于这样的认识，夏蒂埃提出了他对文化史的理解，他认为文化既不是如传统思想史所描述的知识精英阶层的文化产品，也不是心态史中依然从属于第三层次“短时段”历史经验的一部分，更不是只用简单的量化研究就可归纳而成的大致轮廓或趋势。他把过去年鉴学派将文化史从属于经济和社会史置于第三层次的次序颠倒了过来，对他来说，“第三层次根本不是一个层次，而是历史事实的一种基本决定因素”(3)。夏蒂埃称：“由此建立起来的关系并不是心态结构在其物质决定因素上的一种依赖。社会世界本身的再现就是社会现实的组成要素。”(4)也就是说，“经济与社会关系并不优先于或是决定文化实践和文化生产的领域——它们无法借由一种文化之外的经验层面来加以演绎地解释”(5)。

本章将首先从夏蒂埃对传统年鉴历史学中的文化史研究的批评出发，总体地来介绍他的新文化史观；之后分别就他本人在文化史研究中的两个主要方面——法国大革命起源的文化分析和书籍史作个案论述，从而具体地探讨其研究理念在实践中的运用。
