正规书信一般把自己的地址写在右上角。一般先写门牌号、街名、（公寓号）；第二行写地名，小地名在前，大地名在后，最后写区号；接着可写自己的电话号码。在地址下面可写日期。美国多先写月份，再写日期，再写年份。英国则日期在前，月份在后。

在正规书信或商业书信中，常把收信人的称号、地址写在左上角。熟人间通信则不必如此。开始的地方可以与日期平或稍低一点儿。

一般书信都用Dear…开头。熟人可直呼其名，如Dear Helen, Dear Jim。较正式的则需写出头衔，如Dear Ms. Patterson, Dear Professor Jones。如不知对方姓名，可写Dear Sir(s), Dear Sir or Madam, Dear Madam。

带头衔时则不要写名字而只写姓，不要写Dr. Charles Smith，而只写Dr. Smith。在Dear…后，较熟的人可加逗号（，），在商业书信中加冒号（：），在英国有时什么也不加。

书信正文在Dear…下面的一行开始，或空一行再开始。第一行要缩行。结尾时，正式的信多写Yours sincerely（或Sincerely yours）。那种以Dear Sirs, Dear Madame开头的信，多写Yours faithfully。对较熟的人或家里人，则可写Yours，See you或Love（男人间一般不用Love结尾）。在较正式书信中，在Yours sincerely前还可加上一句祝愿的话，如With best wishes或With kind regards。不认识的人则不必如此写。在美国有时还可在信末写Yours truly。

最后则是签上自己的名字，如是手写的信，签上名字就完了，如是打字的信，签字后还在下面用正体字打出来。和家人或好友写信可以只签名字不加姓。在正式信函中姓和名字都签上。
