尽管学科性的普遍性不再使得设计那么具有创新性、强大或有价值，但随着设计探索基于转换、字幕和广义配音的新普遍性，学科性的普遍性仍然有助于另类学科的形成。一个结构完善的学科，不会跟随短时间内就过时的潮流，而会反映我们的世界观和生存方式等方面发生的深刻变化。然而，如上所述，现在的学科性已经使这种结构任意无常。精确性和完善性表现出对现代设计规划语言的尊重；与之相反，另类学科性将信息从一种模式翻译和转码到另一种模式，并徘徊于历史和地理的时、空维度之中。数字科技已使我们的世界成为一个新的领域，其所有维度无论是在时间上还是在空间上都可以通行。
