“全新产品”怎样才能从受保护的社会技术小生境的设计空间上移呢？如若可以的话，“全新产品”就可以在社会技术体制层和社会技术层这两个高级层面里改进产品。克罗阿西娜及其他DIY基础设施项目的设计师，如何脱离受保护的社会技术小生境层，产生实质性变化呢？吉尔斯这样解释，当单个层面的状态以特定的方式匹配时，转型就会发生在MLP三个层次的接合处。例如，处于技术小生境层的创新，会因前期设计的改进或外在团体的支持而越来越受欢迎。同时，处于社会技术层的问题会动摇社会技术体制，为小生境层的设计扩散创造机会。[35]这样，新奇设计突破进入MLP高层的能力，就取决于以下两个因素：一是在社会技术体制层，改进现行使用的设计；二是改进在社会技术层造成破坏的社会技术体制层问题。这两个因素叠加在一起，为新设计挑战旧设计提供了机会。
