作为基督教的福音辅助机构，教会医院凭借其技术和体制的优势，很快扎根于本土，在一片广大的地域之内，迅速地构建起一个强有力的福音传播网络。这既表明基督教对于本土社会有着很强的适应性，也说明本土社会尤其是相对传统的乡村社会对于外来事物有着很强的容纳能力。然而，正如传教士是依据西方经验来观察本土社会一样，本土社会对于传教士和教会医院也同样存在误读。这误读应分为两种。对于不信教的官绅商人和普通病人来说，他们对于传教医生和教会医院主要是一种技术性的选择误读，他们故意忽视了后者的福音功能。而对于本地的基督徒来说，则是一种文化意义上的文本误读。
