我决定通过考查大不列颠的一个地区来证明自己的观点。这个地区被认为是（也许过于夸大了）大不列颠的少数“红色地带”之一(1)，但至少在传统上被称为有些激进的地区可能更为合理。这个地区就是南威尔士，一个正在迅速衰落的煤矿开采和钢铁制造中心。因此，本章不可避免地着重强调工人的阶级实践，尽管也会对资本所有者有所关注。这绝非是一个任意的选择。工人阶级都在抵抗对他们集体认同的社会和空间基础的削弱。长期以来，他们建构抵抗模式的各种方式在最好的情况下被忽视了，在最坏的情况下在正统经济学和某些政府政策中均被视为阻碍空间—经济效率的摩擦力。因此，本章的副标题之所以是“劳动地理学大纲”，是希望其他的学者在地理学中发展出一种社会—空间进程的分析方法，以此来平衡一系列把空间发展看做资本家决策必然结果的研究。
