请吃饭，无论是在中国，还是在美国，都是一件很常见的事情。在中国，无论是请你去大饭店吃宴席，还是请你到家中吃饭，中国人的表达方法基本上就是：“请你吃饭”。“请”字在当今的中国社会里用得极为普遍，既不是一个非常正式的词儿，也绝非一个十分随意的词儿，更多包含的是一种礼貌。“请”在英语里，就是invite somebody to do something。在美国，大多数的请人吃饭，也只是随意而为，并非很正式。因此，当你随意花上几块钱，请朋友吃便当，也说I invite you to dinner，不但会很不合适，也会显得很假。在这种情况下，美国人说的比较多的就是I’ll buy you dinner.（我请你吃饭），或Can I buy you dinner？（我请你吃饭，怎么样？）。同样，请人在外面喝茶、咖啡或饮料，可以说let me buy you a cup of tea（a cup of coffee，a drink.）（我请你喝茶）。根据我做的调查，许多中国人在用英语表达请人吃饭时（非正式场合），不喜欢用buy这个词。我很理解。因为buy在汉语里只是“买”的意思，因此，buy someone dinner，在中国人的眼里，只是给别人买饭而已，没有邀请之意，没有体现出一种盛情。其实，在英语里，if you buy someone dinner，他会很开心的，丝毫不会觉得你在礼貌上有欠缺，相反，他会体会到邀请者的一种付出。这就是汉语和英语在文化上的差异。当然，在正式场合下，英语I invite you to dinner是合适的，既可以表示请你到饭店去吃饭，也可以表示请你到家中吃饭。而if you buy someone dinner，则一定不是自己做饭请对方吃了。
