尽管如此，印度河文明还远谈不上“失落”。如同约翰·马歇尔在1924年的《伦敦新闻画报》上宣告的那样，也正如肯尼思·克拉克在1969年的《文明》节目中再次提醒大家的那样，印度河文明坐落在巴基斯坦和印度，但它却是属于全世界的。1980年，摩亨佐—达罗被联合国教科文组织列入世界遗产遗址名录。时至今日，它那些悬而未解、扑朔迷离的谜题依旧吸引着全世界对文明起源感兴趣的人。就我个人而言，最感兴趣的还是它如何在近半个千年的时间里，保持卓越的艺术、成熟的技术、繁荣的经济与社会平均、政治自由和宗教节制的成功结合。如果进一步的调查能让这幅引人入胜的画面更加精准地展现出来，那么印度河文明也可以成为人类未来的希望之兆。
