当天,罗斯福的死讯传遍了全世界,东京也宣布了重大的政治变动。小矶首相及其大部分内阁成员被罢免。77岁的退役海军大将,枢密院议长铃木贯太郎被任命为新任首相。最高战争指导会议的“六巨头”也被换掉了五个,唯一留下来的是主和派领袖米内光政海军大将。宇垣将军在日记中或许语带讽刺地写道,最近的大规模“神风”攻击和冲绳岛上的地面进攻“就这么推翻了内阁,坑死了罗斯福,带来了各种各样的反应”。[102]
