【解答】英文的 that-clause 是可以改写为 Infinitive 的，例如：

这种句子在意义上是没有什么区别的，因为 that he may 是表目的，而 in order to 也是表目的，所以不妨换用。即是在一些 it 开头的句中，也可把 that-clause 换成 Infinitive，因为 it 是可以代表二者的，不过有时候用子句就非有主语不可，意义便受了限制，说来未尽妥善，这时最好改用不定词就不受主语的限制了。例如：

美国口语中常用的 You don’t say 及 Don’t tell me 二句，照字面翻译，似乎讲不通，不知应如何译法？

【解答】这两句美国话，在电影中时常听到，含义几乎是相同的，都是听到对方的话，表示轻微的惊异而使用的。有时用动词 say，有时用动词 tell，在用 say 的场合比较简单，只说 You don’t say!至多加一个 so 字上去，而成为 You don’t say so!就够了，但在用 tell 时，后面就要接用许多别的字，增加另外的意思，通常都是再接上一个 that- Clause.两句中都包含得有 don’t 一字，可知全是否定的，而且是相当强烈的否定，略同英文普通说的 by no means； on no account； surely not 之类的意思，或是整句的 You really didn’t mean it!中国话可译为“决无其事”，“决不至于”，“那怎么会”，“我（你）（他）不会的”，等等。
